What would happen if you put this engine in a car weighing 3000 lbs? It would be completely off the charts. The SVJ gets a lightened flywheel, lightened crankshaft, and an improved valvetrain to rev up faster than previous variants. The entire exhaust is maybe two feet long and shoots fire. It echoes off canyons and buildings it reverberates in parking garages, setting off car alarms. The 6.5-liter V-12 is the closest a production street car comes to sounding like the glory days of V-12 Formula 1 racing. To call it theater would be an undersell.

On the street, under mild throttle, it’s like using a fax machine: clunky, sloppy, and just generally a relic of another time. On the track, flat-shifting at redline, the kicks and cracks are a riotous assault, which is exactly what you paid all that money for. The gearbox, while obviously fast enough to contribute to a ‘Ring record, is particularly ancient feeling. There is no reason to ever use auto in this car. It took less than 20 seconds for me to go back to manual. I have tested six different Aventadors since the model launched in 2011, and I have never, until today, driven one at length in automatic mode. But in the process, you can absolutely feel it working, giving an almost drifting-like sensation, especially when taking a hairpin particularly hard. The tricks aren’t invisible-while ALA doesn’t do much at sub-legal speeds, rear-steer makes the SVJ a treat down a tight canyon, rather than a chore.
